The Pullman Porters worked America’s sleeping train cars from the 1860s to the 1960s. These men helped establish the Black middle-class, formed the 1st Black labor union, and paved the way for the Civil Rights movement. Dapper, dignified, and clean-cut, Pullman Porters worked day and night, tidying trains, serving food, and carrying luggage. Being a porter offered steady income and an opportunity to travel - very rare for Black workers of that era.
Being a Pullman Porter was one of the most prestigious jobs in the African-American community during that era, but it was still essentially a servile job. Porters were not even referred to by their given names; they were all called "George" (after George Pullman).
